Stoner shrugs off Honda engine worries to finish top on final day
02 MARCH 2012, BY SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT

WORLD Champion, Casey Stoner shrugged off Honda’s engine worries as he stormed to the top of time sheets to end the final day of MotoGP pre-season tests at the Sepang International Circuit today.

Stoner did not quite reach the heights of the first test, 4 weeks ago when he set 1 minute 59.607s – breaking SIC’ s lap record, albeit unofficially – but still managed to set an impressive time of 2:00.473 in lap 26 from a total of 34 laps.

After Honda’s no show yesterday, Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, Alvaro Bautista returned to action today as HRC gave the green light after carrying out engine checks following a problem on Pedrosa's bike which was corrected after overnights checks in Japan.

The first two days of testing were both interrupted by rain storms, but clear blue skies dominated the third and final day , with teams getting to work early to make up for the time lost yesterday due to rain.

All riders were out on track upon opening, including all four Hondas, and under ideal 40 degree track temperatures with Stoner focusing his efforts on efficient fuel consumption.

Pedrosa improved his pace from Tuesday to join his Honda Repsol team mate in second place +0.175s with Andrea Dovizioso (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) sitting in third with a time of 2:00.802.

Jorge Lorenzo paced his YZR-M1 four tenths behind Stoner, declaring that he was especially happy with the improvements made to his bike’s electronics.

Lorenzo crashed before the midday point and returned to the Yamaha Factory garages, as did team-mate Ben Spies, who crashed in the morning before he could improve on his time from yesterday. That left the Spies eight in the lineup, though the Texan reported being satisfied with his accomplishments thus far after sitting pretty on top of the time sheets yesterday.

Héctor Barberá was the best Ducati finisher with a sixth place finish as the Pramac Racing rider bounced back from yesterday’s crash in the rain and bettering his time by three tenths.

Alvaro Bautista crashed his San Carlo Honda Gresini bike though walked away uninjured after marking a seven tenths time improvement from Tuesday.

Nicky Hayden continued on the road to recovery, from a shoulder injury which hampered his testing in Sepang, 4 weeks ago when he recorded 2:01.609 in 10th while his Italian team mate, Valentino Rossi was one rung above clocking 2:01.550 after 57 laps.
